The Government of Canada takes action to strengthen the international mail market in Canada

OTTAWA — The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), today tabled a key amendment to the Canada Post Corporation Act that allows letter exporters to collect letters in Canada for transmittal and delivery to countries outside Canada.

"The Government would like to provide more choice and opportunity to Canadian businesses by opening up competition within the outgoing international mailing marketplace," said Minister Merrifield. "This amendment allows for the growth of the international mail market in Canada and will protect thousands of Canadian jobs at a time when we need them most."
The proposed amendment to the Canada Post Corporation Act modifies Canada Post’s exclusive privilege under Section 15 by removing letters intended for delivery to an addressee outside Canada, while retaining Canada Post’s exclusive privilege within Canada.

The Canada Post Corporation is a Crown corporation and one of the largest employers in Canada. It serves approximately 33 million Canadians, and more than one million businesses and public institutions.

The Canada Post Corporation Act, which came into effect in 1981, regulates mail services in Canada.
